Challenge:
The Abu Ghazaleh Mosque was envisioned as a contemporary religious landmark within the urban fabric of Amman, requiring a design that blended modern architectural expression with traditional Islamic identity. The challenge was to respect the spiritual and cultural significance of mosque architecture while introducing a contemporary approach that reflected the evolving nature of religious spaces in urban settings. Additionally, the project needed to balance aesthetic integrity with functionality, ensuring that prayer halls, residential spaces, and service areas were efficiently integrated into a cohesive architectural composition.

Approach:
Designed by Dar Al Omran - Rasem Badran (DAO-Badran), the Abu Ghazaleh Mosque carefully fuses modern materiality with traditional Islamic design principles, creating a structure that stands out as a focal point within its surroundings while maintaining a deep connection to heritage.

Concrete facades and ceilings define the mosque’s modern aesthetic, while select stone cladding on key exterior elevations ensures a visual and material continuity with Amman’s architectural heritage.
The main prayer hall, designed to accommodate 700 men, is complemented by a mezzanine floor for an additional 300 worshippers, ensuring an inclusive and adaptable prayer environment.
The basement level houses essential service areas, optimizing the spatial organization to maintain an open and unobstructed worship space above.
The residences for the Imam and Mo’athen are thoughtfully positioned to ensure privacy and accessibility, reinforcing the mosque’s role as both a place of worship and a center for religious leadership.

Impact:
The Abu Ghazaleh Mosque stands as a contemporary beacon of religious architecture in Amman, seamlessly blending modern construction techniques with the timeless principles of mosque design. Through its strategic spatial planning, material authenticity, and commitment to cultural continuity, the project redefines the role of mosques in urban settings, ensuring both functionality and architectural distinction. By embracing tradition while looking toward the future, the mosque serves as a lasting symbol of faith, community, and architectural innovation.
