Challenge:
The Architecture Heritage Center in Diriyah required a design that would seamlessly blend contemporary architectural techniques with the deep-rooted traditions of Najdi heritage. The aim was to create an immersive experience that takes visitors on a journey through Saudi Arabia’s architectural evolution while maintaining a strong connection to the site’s natural and historical context.
Approach:
The design concept is centered around an experiential narrative, guiding visitors through a carefully curated architectural discovery. The rooftops are activated as functional spaces, connected to the ground level through a series of sloped pathways that enhance circulation and create a dynamic exploration route. The building’s morphology reflects a sculptural quality, evoking a sense of timelessness and storytelling. Inspired by the natural formations of the Najdi plateau, the structure appears as a series of rock-like compositions that establish a visual and symbolic dialogue between the built environment and the landscape. The interplay of light, shadow, and materiality reinforces a sense of authenticity, emphasizing traditional Najdi architectural principles within a contemporary framework.
Impact:
More than a museum, the Architecture Heritage Center stands as a living archive of Saudi architectural history, offering an interactive and educational experience that connects visitors with the past, present, and future of Najdi design. Through its seamless integration into the landscape and its carefully crafted architectural language, the project reinforces Diriyah’s status as a cultural and historical landmark, ensuring that the stories of Saudi heritage continue to inspire future generations.
