Starting Date: 2004
Completion Date: 2004
Challenge:
The design competition sought to create a duplex villa prototype that could seamlessly adapt to multiple architectural styles, including Islamic, Gulf, Mediterranean, and Modern influences. The challenge was to develop a cohesive design approach that maintained functional efficiency and aesthetic richness, while ensuring each variation retained a strong architectural identity. Additionally, the villa had to balance contemporary lifestyle needs with the traditional visual elements of each style, ensuring versatility in both form and function.
Approach:
Designed by Dar Al Omran - Rasem Badran (DAO-Badran), the villa was envisioned as a two-layered composition, with a stone-clad base anchoring the structure and an upper level finished in plaster, creating a harmonious contrast in materiality. The architectural alternatives were developed with distinctive stylistic elements, ensuring that each variation—Islamic, Gulf, Mediterranean, and Modern—resonated with its cultural inspiration. The richness of the elevational treatments and spatial articulations was achieved through careful massing, detailing, and proportioning, ensuring that each design iteration retained a sense of elegance and depth.
Impact:
The duplex villa design competition demonstrated the adaptability of contemporary residential architecture while respecting regional and historical influences. By offering a spectrum of design alternatives, the project successfully catered to diverse aesthetic preferences while maintaining a strong foundation in functionality and modern living standards. Through its refined approach to materiality, spatial composition, and stylistic versatility, the project set a precedent for flexible and culturally responsive villa designs in Dubai's evolving architectural landscape.
