Project Description:

2014 - Kirkuk city is the center of the Iraqi Governorate of Kirkuk, one of the most important cities of oil production, the current boundary of Kirkuk city includes the historic old town arabkha (Arafa) with an estimated age of over 5000 years. Located about 240 km north of Baghdad, bordered by West Humrain mountain range. It is estimated the current population of Kirkuk is (1’585’864) person according to the department of statistics.
The project aims to update the existing master plan the city from the 1950s, as an attempt to solve the current problems of urban and spatial development policies and economic development for the future, through information gathering for understanding the current situation, analyzing this information in order to prepare and evaluate several alternatives and choose the best alternative. Following is the preparation of detailed master plans for the sectoral areas selected for detailed planning, as areas with specific priority for planning such as the banks of the river, the new industrial city and the adjacent modern housing.
Throughout this project, the planning team will update the database of population, housing, land use (residential, industrial, commercial) and infrastructure services, data on transport and traffic, and analyze it using geographic information system GIS, showing the urban fabric of the study based on a recent satellite image. In order to produce an updated holistic plan, aimed at linking Kirkuk with its regional context in accordance with the regional study that determines the best alternative for urban development and identify trends and areas of expansion and future growth, also eliminate the proliferation of informal settlements to provide land for residential use. In addition to supporting and stimulating economic and social development through the allocation of land for commercial, industrial, agricultural and land earmarked for social services such as hospitals, schools, etc… It will also plan to upgrade infrastructure network (electricity, water supply, communications, sanitation) aim to improve quality of life for city residents and visitors by providing spaces for recreational activities, parks and green spaces. This planning process is consistent with the objectives of the project for achieving balanced urban development over the long term in the study area and its context.
