Location: Amman - Jordan

Total Built-up Area: 18,000 m2 (Phase 1: 7,800 m2)
Construction Cost: US $7,000,000
Starting Date: 1992 Design (3 Phases), 1995 Supervision
Completion Date: 1995 Design, 1997 Supervision

Challenge:
The project aimed to establish a state-of-the-art healthcare facility in Amman that could cater to middle and upper-class patients, as well as attract international medical tourism. Designing a hospital that could address diverse medical needs, promote healing, and create a comfortable environment for both patients and visitors required a thoughtful integration of traditional architectural elements and modern medical facilities. Additionally, the hospital had to be developed in three phases to ensure operational continuity during its construction.

Approach:
Drawing inspiration from the traditional Bimaristan concept, the hospital was designed around two open courtyards that served as healing spaces, physically and visually separating patient areas from visitor zones. This arrangement not only facilitated an effective healing process but also enhanced the overall patient and visitor experience.

The hospital’s four-story main building housed 100 beds along with a comprehensive range of medical departments, including Dialysis, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Maternity, Pediatrics, I.C.U., and C.C.U. Departments, as well as Emergency Services, Physical Therapy, Labs, and Imaging Units. An adjacent building was dedicated to outpatient clinics and medical educational facilities, further supporting the hospital’s mission to provide holistic care.

The phased approach allowed for careful planning and execution, ensuring the seamless addition of departments while maintaining the facility’s functionality. By incorporating traditional design principles with advanced medical planning, the project established a hospital that met modern healthcare standards while honoring the region’s architectural heritage.

Impact:
The Specialty Hospital quickly became a distinguished medical institution in Jordan, recognized for its high-quality care, patient-centered design, and its ability to attract international patients. The phased construction process ensured the facility was operational throughout its development, supporting the community’s healthcare needs without disruption. By blending tradition and innovation, the Specialty Hospital set a new benchmark for healthcare architecture in the region.
