Challenge:
The Al-Nasri Residence was envisioned as a modern reinterpretation of Moroccan courtyard architecture, requiring a design that preserved the organic simplicity and spatial fluidity of traditional Moroccan homes while incorporating the functional demands of contemporary living. The challenge lay in maintaining a seamless dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring that the residence remained both private and connected to nature. Additionally, the project needed to respond to Jeddah’s climate, incorporating passive cooling strategies and environmentally adaptive design elements.
Approach:
Designed by Dar Al Omran - Rasem Badran (DAO-Badran), the residence was structured around a central courtyard, fostering a natural transition between living spaces and outdoor areas. The spatial organization emphasized an inward-facing design, allowing for maximum shade, cross-ventilation, and thermal comfort—key principles of traditional Moroccan architecture adapted for Jeddah’s climate. The architectural language embraced simple geometric forms, earthy materials, and handcrafted detailing, ensuring a balance between elegance and authenticity. The residence was set within an expansive desert-inspired landscape, reinforcing a strong connection to nature while enhancing privacy and tranquility.
Impact:
The Al-Nasri Residence successfully blends heritage with innovation, offering a contemporary interpretation of Moroccan architecture that respects tradition while addressing modern needs. Through its courtyard-based spatial composition, passive cooling strategies, and refined material selection, the project creates a timeless living environment where cultural identity and contemporary functionality coexist. By seamlessly integrating architectural tradition with modern comfort, the residence stands as a benchmark for private homes in Saudi Arabia that honor the past while embracing the future.
